James McSherry


James McSherry is a graduate of The School of Fine Arts at Columbia University where he was the recipient of numerous writing fellowships. He graduated with a master of Fine Arts and his first book “A Clean Streets A Happy Street: A Bronx Memoir” was published in October of 2004. It was the recipient of the BRIO AWARD and was chosen for the “ Young Adult” collection in the New York Public Library.

In addition, Mr. McSherry just recently won the “Chapter One” competition; open to all New York City Writers, for the first chapter of his upcoming novel. (‘Chapter One” is sponsored by the New York Public Library and The Bronx Writers Center in collaboration with The Bronx Council on the Arts.) McSherry has won numerous BRIO awards for his writing and has written, Produced and directed a sold out Off Broadway play “The Crotona Lounge” at the Producers Club. He starred in an autobiographical one man show. “ Crime Scene Reporter” to limited sold out runs in the Producers Cluband The Blue Heron Theatre in Manhattan. His first screenplay was optioned by Lawrence Gordon Productions (“48 Hours,” “Die Hard,”) and the dialogue was a cross between “Diner and Goodfellas”, Daily Variety reported. Mr. McSherry is currently adapting his Autobiography for the screen and has collaborated with William Lappe (Writer, Director,” Even Steven”) and Ralph Squillante ( actor, ‘ a Bronx Tale”), on several screenplays. Also, James McSherry had a feature starring role as a New York City cop in “Even Steven”, and appeared in Wayne Gurman’s feature film “Bronx Paradise”.

Mr. McSherry teaches writing in Lehman High School in the Bronx and was awarded a “Teacher of the Year” award by the New York Post. He has also given writing workshops in collaboration with the New York Public Library throughout the city. “A Clean Streets a Happy Street” was just approved by the Department of Education and will soon be in the hands of New York City children in the public High Schools in all five boroughs.
